Chapter 2 in The Economics of Artificial Intelligence, 2025, pp 18-42 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Related to the distinction between weak and strong (or narrow and general) AI is the classification of AI systems on the basis of how much data they can store, and the way in which they use the data. AI encompasses various specialised domains designed to execute various tasks. The four main domains are machine learning, natural language processing, generative artificial intelligence and computer vision. Each one of these domains has sub-domains. Technologies that are related to, or used in conjunction with, AI include big data, quantum computing, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, biometric identification, and robotics and automation. AI and these related technologies have synergies and feedback effects.
