A chapter in Handbook of Grand Challenges in Global Production and Innovation Networks, 2025, pp 1-3 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This Handbook addresses the emerging interest in sustainability, grand challenges, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among scholars, policymakers, companies, and citizens. It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue by bringing together contributions from various fields within the social sciences. The book introduces the concepts of global production and innovation networks as an umbrella concept, emphasizing their role in addressing complex, interconnected global challenges such as climate change, social issues, and economic inequalities. It also invites scholars to embrace it as a concept that can bridge different academic fields. The Handbook highlights the challenges and potential for sustainable innovation and other solutions in these regions by focusing on the Global South. The contributions are organized into four parts or themes: 1) innovation, sustainability/SDGs in the context of global production and innovation network; 2) governing sustainability; 3) operations and supply chains management, industry 4 and SDGs in the context of global production and innovation network; and 4) critical approaches to sustainability. This comprehensive approach not only documents the current state of research but also actively shapes the future of sustainability studies in the context of global production and innovation networks. The handbook aspires to provide empirical and theoretical insights that inspire new strategies for achieving the SDGs and managing global production networks more sustainably.
