Abstract:
Supplier development has long been a critical theme for scholars and supply chain managers. While the early literature examined the various forms of supplier development (e.g., direct firm involvement, use of incentives), the field has experienced a theoretical revival with an emphasis on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sustainability. This chapter adds to the renewed interest in supplier development by introducing a novel concept: governance interventions. We propose that this idea or concept can act as a unifying concept, providing a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability and SDGs in supply chain and suppliers’ developments. We illustrate the value of the new concept by applying it to unpack the intricate linkages between deforestation and the agro-food supply chains. Empirically, we analyze the dominant market-based governance interventions, particularly those with a polycentric governance component. This analysis shows that little progress has been made in the context of governance of agro-cultural global supply chains. The chapter further illustrates that private-public collaboration is needed to ensure progress.
