Chapter 16 in Handbook of Grand Challenges in Global Production and Innovation Networks, 2025, pp 306-312 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This concluding chapter provides an overview of the key themes explored in the handbook. After summarizing the most important insights and illustrating their complex interconnections, the chapter identifies five critical areas for future research: ambitious environmental research, intensified focus on social factors, heightened awareness of political contexts, integration of diverse approaches within theoretical boundaries, and promotion of intervention research. These areas are pivotal for advancing the field and addressing the complex, interconnected sustainability issues. The chapter calls for a paradigm shift towards nature-positive and regenerative practices, a deeper exploration of social sustainability, and a comprehensive understanding of the political dynamics influencing global production and innovation networks. It advocates for multidisciplinary collaboration and innovative research methodologies to tackle these challenges effectively.
