Opportunities for entrepreneurial sustainability initiatives to advance Sustainable Development Goals

Helene Balslev Clausen and Léo-Paul Dana

Chapter 4 in Handbook of Grand Challenges in Global Production and Innovation Networks, 2025, pp 63-77 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: As Norwegian social anthropologist Fredrik Barth (1969) considered entrepreneurs as agents of social change, entrepreneurship has been regarded as a driver of change in communities. In contrast, little research has been done on the intersection between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and local entrepreneurial activities. Despite the SDGs setting a new global environmental, social, and political agenda, with particular emphasis on the private sector's strength to achieve these goals (e.g., entrepreneurial activities), it appears that localized entrepreneurial activities may be an overlooked resource that could significantly drive sustainability transformations. This chapter aims to further understand the complex interplay between local entrepreneurial ventures and the global framework of the SDGs. While the empirical focus is on Fiji and Morocco, the argument is relevant in a broader context. The chapter underscores the importance of engaging in essential interdisciplinary discussions concerning sustainability development, entrepreneurial business, and environmentalism, inviting the audience to be part of this larger conversation.
