Abstract: Inquiring into complex challenges of societal, operational and environmental relevance requires new research designs, methods of knowledge production, learning mechanisms and evaluation criteria. This chapter introduces the rationale and relevance of transdisciplinary research (TDR) as a response to those challenges. It locates the challenges in context and provides an overview of TDR before introducing the structure of the book in prospect.
