Chapter 5 in How to Organise Transdisciplinary Research for Transformative Action and Knowledge Co-Production, 2026, pp 58-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Nature underpins society and the economy; however, ongoing declines in nature threaten a safe operating space for humanity. Since the publication of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, natural capital accounting has gained traction as an effective means to gather information in relation to nature's stocks and flows, supporting understanding of our impacts and dependencies on nature. This chapter outlines key findings from the application of natural capital accounting methods through the Irish Natural Capital Accounting for Sustainable Environments (INCASE) project. Applying the United Nations System of Environmental and Economic Accounting–Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) framework at catchment scale, we identified key process steps relating to data collation, stakeholder engagement, and the need for a shared language across disciplines to facilitate the integration of nature into decision-making. Our findings demonstrate natural capital accounting is a transdisciplinary process bringing the advantage of multiple perspectives while requiring consistent interpretation between disciplines.
