Unpacking the agora of transdisciplinary knowledge production: developing Nature-Based Solutions Education

Gemma Donnelly-Cox, Conor Dowling and Maria Gallo

Chapter 6 in How to Organise Transdisciplinary Research for Transformative Action and Knowledge Co-Production, 2026, pp 74-88 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the agora, or marketplace for ideas where Mode 2 knowledge production takes place in transdisciplinary research. The embedded case study is focused on the agora for developing and embedding a nature-based solutions (NBS) curriculum within higher education. It draws on Trinity College Dublin's engagement in the EU-funded Horizon Europe project ‘NBS EduWORLD’. It addresses the question: What can we learn about collaboration and contestation in transdisciplinary research from a project involving design and implementation of NBS education within an NBS community of researchers, educational professionals, NBS practitioners, communities, and policymakers? Conclusions are drawn about the contribution of a transdisciplinary approach to the agora for NBS research and education.
