Abstract: Gentrification is often discussed in terms of housing, investment, or urban development, yet its effects on education remain understudied. This chapter lays the conceptual and analytical foundation for the book by providing a critical literature review of the main effects of gentrification on schooling and examining how urban transformation intersects with market-oriented educational reforms. The analysis shows that the arrival of middle-class newcomers, together with policies emphasizing choice and competition, does not automatically benefit local schools; rather, these processes may jointly redistribute advantage, produce new forms of displacement, and reinforce educational inequalities. The ways families, schools, and policymakers respond are shaped by local institutional and urban contexts, producing varied outcomes across different settings. The chapter prepares the ground for the book's case studies, providing a framework to explore the uneven and context-dependent effects of gentrification and educational reforms in cities across Europe and beyond.
