Gentrifying schools in gentrifying neighborhoods: recent developments and future research in the United States

Abstract: Numerous studies have examined the links between gentrification and schooling in the United States. Much of the early work in this space focused primarily on the preferences and strategies of gentrifier parents as they navigate urban educational marketplaces. In this chapter, we briefly summarize the foundational literature before reviewing new developments that have emerged in the last decade. Specifically, we center on two questions that illustrate a scholarly shift toward understanding the institutional structures and actors that shape and react to the behaviors of advantaged families: (1) How do school or district policies influence urban middle-class parents’ schooling decisions? and (2) How do school personnel respond to gentrification pressures and engage with middle-class parents within gentrifying schools? We conclude by proposing a roadmap for future study that broadens the scope of inquiry and examines how the current political landscape in the United States may upend established patterns and dynamics.
