Do gentrifiers fly from local schools? The case of Barcelona

Abstract: Barcelona's rapidly transforming neighbourhoods offer a unique lens to examine how gentrifiers interact with local public schools. Using quantitative analyses across areas with varying levels of gentrification, the chapter uncovers a complex pattern. Families in gentrifying areas often opt out of local schools, reflecting “white flight” trends seen globally, leveraging spatial and cultural capital to access preferred options outside the catchment area or in subsidised private schools. Yet, among those who stay, there is a noticeable shift towards engaging with local public schools, indicating selective participation. These dual dynamics – opting out and selective opting in – show how gentrification can simultaneously promote social mixing and reinforce inequalities. The findings underscore the need for targeted policy measures, including controlled school choice, catchment area reforms, and balanced allocation of vulnerable students.
