This is (not) fine: exploring the lives of family carers of adults with learning disabilities in turbulent times

Abstract: In this chapter, we talk about our work with family carers of people with learning disabilities to create an online exhibition about their experiences of care and mental health in England. We explain why we changed our plan to co-create an online survey about mental health with family carers and why we decided to work together to create an online exhibition about mental health instead. The online exhibition became a space where family carers could share what mattered to them about their mental health experiences. Carers shared pictures, songs, crafts, writing, sounds and films. We learned about the limitations of surveys as an approach to research with family carers. We also found out how tricky it is to change plans in the middle of a research project. We learned about the technical and ethical challenges of curating an online exhibition. But most of all, we learned about the power of co-production and working together with family carers to create ways of sharing their experiences in ways that make sense to them. And finally, we learned about the power of the exhibits themselves to provoke conversations for change.
