Chapter 11 in Mercantilism, 2025, pp 165-171 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Mercantilism may have been a stage in economic thought. Yet its focus on the national rather than the global or cosmopolitan interest may not have died out. Regulation and intervention may remain crucial. Liberalism may have been discredited. International alliances may have replaced single-country solutions. Incompetent and corrupt governance may have been eclipsed by democracy. It strengthens the case for the state.
