Land Policy: a path to interdisciplinary research on governance and commons

Xenia Katsigianni and Pieter Van den Broeck

Chapter 18 in The Value of Place, 2025, pp 278-296 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores land policy as an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates political economy of land, socio-spatial sciences, property, and legal studies to address critical aspects of spatial development, as well as conflicts around land governance and the commons. Building on pedagogical experiences and research approaches developed by Prof. Pavlos Marinos Delladetsimas and the authors of this chapter, in collaboration with other colleagues, this chapter underscores the transformative potential of land policy configurations to establish hybrid property regimes and operate as arenas of interactions and negotiations. It shows how land policy systems can be led from ‘above’ and from ‘below’ and are channelled by path-dependent processes of decision-making and socio-economic development. The discussion advocates for a broader, politically nuanced understanding of land policy and highlights the need to transcend structuralist views by incorporating community agency and relational perspectives on land.
