Chapter 19 in The Value of Place, 2025, pp 297-317 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter draws on the foundation and evolution of the International Module in Spatial Development Planning (IMSDP), a 30-ECTS research training programme offering a pluralistic and transdisciplinary approach to spatial development analysis and planning. The IMSDP integrates disciplines such as economics, sociology, geography, and ecology, emphasizing equity, sustainability, and social innovation. It fosters collaborative learning between students and staff through research seminars, lectures, case studies, Action Research, and individual tutoring. The chapter examines the IMSDP through the lens of relational planning and commons, exploring its development as a collective, open-ended pedagogical experiment. It highlights challenges of commoning in education, while reflecting on the programme's commitment to inclusive practices, co-production of knowledge, and shared ethics in spatial planning education.
