TINA's shadow: navigating fragments of the ‘social’ in the European Union
Carlos Rodrigues
Chapter 6 in The Value of Place, 2025, pp 83-100 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the consequences of the mindset of ‘There Is No Alternative’ (TINA) on the emptying of the ‘social’ in the European Union. In doing so, it produces a critique of the neoliberal consensus and the inherent belief in the virtues of free markets, deregulation, privatization, and minimal government intervention. The so-called ‘democratic alternance’ between centre-left and centre-right governments does little to challenge this neoliberal ‘inevitability’, resulting in the marginalization of meaningful social change and the exacerbation of social and geographical imbalances. While acknowledging their ‘formidableness’, the chapter explores the potential for alternative paths rooted in innovative forms of collective organization capable of politically challenging inequality and exclusion.
