The road to God-knows where? The polycrisis and the European radical right

Owen Worth

Chapter 18 in Critical Political Economy of the European Polycrisis, 2025, pp 274-288 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The European Far Right continues to evolve as a symptom of the polycrisis. While Brexit was expected to curb EU-exit desires, it has not halted the radical right's growth. Since the Brexit vote, diverse discourses on the EU have emerged, ranging from European-wide ethnic nationalism to renewed calls for withdrawal, with various positions in between. Thus, the far right has redefined its Euroscepticism beyond national withdrawal, creating contradictory narratives. This chapter explores these competing positions, arguing that they reflect the longstanding inconsistencies in far-right discourses. Ultimately, these contradictions highlight the insecurities and unpredictability of the polycrisis.
