A lasting legacy? A critical political economy perspective on Berlusconism and its afterlives

Daniela Caterina, Adriano Cozzolino, Gemma Gasseau and Davide Monaco

Chapter 19 in Critical Political Economy of the European Polycrisis, 2025, pp 289-303 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Italy exemplifies the interplay of neoliberalisation and the rise of far-right forces within the EU Polycrisis. Understanding this requires historical grounding, particularly through a critical political economy analysis of Silvio Berlusconi's hegemonic project and its lasting impact on Italy's politico-economic landscape. Berlusconi's recent death has reignited debates on his legacy, yet critical perspectives remain lacking, often overshadowed by cultural and moralistic concerns. This chapter addresses this gap by examining Berlusconi's politico-economic project, focusing on ideology, policymaking, social blocs, and his reshaping of state apparatuses. This perspective is crucial for understanding right-wing hegemonic projects and assessing Berlusconi's influence on today's political landscape, including Giorgia Meloni's government and broader debates on competing hegemonic projects and transnational social forces.
