AI in party competition
Pascal D. Koenig ()
Chapter 7 in Understanding the Politics of Artificial Intelligence, 2025, pp 88-98 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter sheds light on the role that AI plays in the central arena of party politics. It describes major existing political conflict dimensions that can be linked to the impacts of AI. These form the background for discussing how political parties differ in their policy offers concerning AI and to what extent these differences map onto extant patterns of conflict. Is AI integrated into these existing patterns or does competition over AI depart from them? By describing how political actors compete over AI, the chapter discusses whether AI can be understood as a politicised issue. It charts what is known about how salient AI has been thus far in political competition and how polarised political actors have been on this topic. It also discusses the question of whether AI can be understood as a distinct political issue, given that it is dispersed over many different established policy areas.
