Politicising AI
Pascal D. Koenig ()
Chapter 8 in Understanding the Politics of Artificial Intelligence, 2025, pp 99-109 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Under certain conditions, AI uses can become publicly salient and even lead to polarisation and contestation. This chapter examines instances in which AI becomes politicised and what it takes for this to occur. It explains why processes of linking AI systems to social values are especially important for their politicisation. Some cases are inherently political because they overtly violate social values, but their problematic nature may not be contentious, thus preventing polarising views and a strong politicisation. This is also true for cases in which uncovering undesirable impacts of AI uses can make them a political issue. The biggest scope for meaning-making and politicising AI lies with cases in which AI systems, their performance, and their impacts are characterised by ambiguity, which can sustain conflicting interpretations. This can give rise to competing efforts to make a specific interpretation regarding an AI system prevail in public debate.
