Reframing structural transformation towards sustainable and inclusive prosperity

Antonio Andreoni

Chapter 2 in Rethinking Economic Transformation for Sustainable and Inclusive Development, 2024, pp 25-48 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Structural transformation has always been part of countries’ development pathway, but today new challenges make this journey more difficult. The simultaneous and overlapping transformations of economy, environment, society and digital landscape make the transformation more compressed. This chapter reviews the traditional literature on structural transformation and highlights its blind spots in the current context. It then proposes an enhanced new framework for sustainable structural transformation under compressed development that connects industry, technology, society and environment, and proposes strategies to close the feedback loops between these domains to create virtuous loops for a transformation towards greener and more sustainable societies and economies.
