Chapter 14 in The Elgar Companion to International Business and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2026, pp 300-317 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter critically examines how multinational mining corporations operationalize Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through community partnerships in Ghana, focusing specifically on Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's initiatives in its operational areas. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of community perceptions with qualitative insights from key stakeholders. Our findings reveal a landscape where CSR efforts yield mixed results, influenced by factors such as stakeholder engagement and power dynamics. Results indicate that while Newmont's initiatives contribute positively to several SDGs, particularly in infrastructure and education, challenges persist in areas such as fund management and long-term sustainability. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on CSR in the mining sector and presents an understanding of how mining companies can more effectively align their strategies with SDGs to create meaningful and sustainable impacts in host communities.
