Gender equality and empowerment in international business

Abstract: This chapter examines the existing literature that deepens the issue of gender equality in international business, focusing on women's representation, empowerment, obstacles, and contributions. The research method used in this chapter is a critical analysis and synthesis of the existing literature on gender equality and empowerment. Additionally, in the empirical part, we use the primary data collected in the survey conducted in 2022 on a sample of women running internationalized firms from four Visegrad countries (V4), namely the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. The research results show the complexity of the gender equality problem, which can be visible in various areas of international business implementation (leadership, entrepreneurship, management, etc.). The issue of (in)equality itself can refer to many concepts, for example, the glass ceiling, gender parity, and so on. Empirical research provides evidence explaining what determines women's international entrepreneurship based on the sample from the Visegrad countries.
