A chapter in Governing Differences, 2025, pp 1-21 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter introduces and outlines the objectives, nature, and structure of the volume Governing Differences: Social Diversity, Polycentric Political Economy, and Modus Vivendi. The increasing pressure from growing societal heterogeneity, cleavages, and polarization is straining existing institutions and regimes, leading them to undermine the foundational principles of modus vivendi – the philosophy of coexistence that has historically sustained them. The book is a response to the urgent need to revisit and reinforce modus vivendi as the core principle of governance, advocating for systems that accommodate diversity through tolerance, negotiation, and trade-offs. This involves linking contemporary modus vivendi political theories with governance frameworks based on institutional diversity and polycentrism, grounded in the traditions of public choice and institutionalism.
