Chapter 6 in The Social Acceptance of Renewable Energy Projects, 2026, pp 122-140 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The present chapter introduces a methodology for assessing community acceptance of renewable energy projects in Chile. Adapted from the High Conservation Values (HCV) framework, the methodology focuses on identifying and evaluating “Objects of Value,” defined as territorial elements of great importance to local communities, which can be environmental, social, cultural, or economic. The main objective of applying this methodology is to reduce socio-environmental conflicts and facilitate the acceptance of renewable energy projects, ensuring that the values and priorities of communities are integrated into decision-making from the early stages of territorial planning. The methodology encompasses the definition of community acceptance, the identification and classification of Objects of Value, and their quantification and spatial representation. The methodology has been adapted to different types of energy projects, such as hydroelectric and transmission lines, identifying different sets of Objects of Value according to the potential impacts of each project.
