Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Fraud and Society, 2026, pp 95-113 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the regulatory frameworks and enforcement models developed in response to fraud and corruption in Victoria, Australia, offering a comprehensive analysis of the state's historical and contemporary approaches to dealing with fraud and corruption in society. The chapter highlights the significant role that fraud and corruption have played in shaping Victoria's governance landscape, affecting its public sector, economy, and political system. The chapter further discusses the ongoing efforts to enhance institutional accountability and transparency, noting that these issues remain at the forefront of governance reforms. With the recent establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission at the federal level, alongside state-level bodies like the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission, a clear effort exists to address corruption and fraud nationally. The chapter emphasises that Victoria's continuous struggle against fraud and corruption has shaped its regulatory environment and provided a framework for national efforts to maintain public trust, transparency, and ethical governance.
