The eight rights of logistics management

Kee-hung Lai

Chapter 2 in Concise Introduction to Logistics Management, 2026, pp 23-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter presents the eight rights (8Rs) of Logistics Management, an enhancement of the traditional Seven Rights, by including “right practices” to highlight the importance of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The 8Rs framework assists companies in ensuring the delivery of the correct product, in the appropriate quantity and condition, to the right location and customer, at the optimal time and cost, all while integrating environmentally and socially responsible practices. It emphasizes the significance of downstream and upstream logistics, focusing on customer satisfaction and procurement efficiency. Furthermore, this chapter underscores the importance of partnerships with suppliers and customers in achieving cost effectiveness, quality assurance, and innovation. By following the 8Rs, companies can align their logistics operations with sustainability objectives, ensuring profitability while reducing environmental and societal impacts.
