Health, safety, and well-being in construction in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review

Abstract: In many countries, the construction industry has a poor reputation because of the prevalence of occupational accidents, injuries, and illnesses. This situation is worse in developing countries. The construction literature is replete with studies about safety, health, and well-being in sub-Saharan African countries. However, very limited studies have sought to consolidate the existing research to offer insights into the current status of research in the domain. This chapter, through a systematic literature review, maps out the research landscape for construction safety, health, and well-being in sub-Saharan African countries. The chapter addresses key questions such as: what are the dominant facets of research and trends in the domain?; what methods of research are commonly applied?; what are the research gaps?; and what are the future directions for research? By addressing these questions, the chapter helps to set a research agenda that would stimulate evidence-based insights to inform policy and practice.
