Towards the adoption of Industry 5.0 in the construction industry in developing countries

Abstract: Industry 4.0 and 5.0 describe stages of the industrial revolution marked by technological advances in manufacturing. Industry 4.0 enhances efficiency through the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and Big Data, enabling automation and precision in production. Industry 5.0 builds on this by reintroducing human collaboration, with cognitive computing and AI supporting creativity and decision-making. In construction, this leads to sustainable practices, customisation, and improved safety via wearable devices and Augmented Reality. The chapter explores Industry 4.0 and 5.0 research in construction industries of developing countries. First, key features and enabling technologies are reviewed. Then the adoption levels are examined. A bibliometric analysis using Scopus is next undertaken. It reveals research clusters and top scholars in developing regions. The chapter emphasises Industry 4.0's transformative role and outlines future research directions for Industry 5.0. It concludes that realising benefits of Industry 5.0 requires policy, investments in technology and education, and international collaboration to address challenges.
