The second urban revolution – the view from the Israeli-Palestinian periphery

Juval Portugali

Chapter 9 in The Second Urban Revolution, 2025, pp 226-248 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter opens the third part of the book whose focus is the second urban revolution, where the leading thesis is that the essence of this revolution is a shift from nationalism, which was the dominant social order in the twentieth century, to urbanism, which, since the end of the 20th century, is emerging as a new generative order of society. Chapter 9 examines this process from the perspective of the Israeli-Palestinian periphery, which in several ways can be seen as a laboratory where global processes are analyzed and scrutinized. The discussion follows the emergence and development of two rival national societies and movements, and their settlement systems, out of nationalism as their common generative order, the implicit relations between the two, the resultant urban processes before and after the 1967 war, and the effects of the current processes of globalization and urbanization.
