Complexity, self-organization and the second urban revolution
Juval Portugali
Chapter 13 in The Second Urban Revolution, 2025, pp 313-347 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter unlocks the central thesis of the book: we are currently at the center of a second urban revolution. The first urban revolution brought the city and urbanism to the world stage, while the current urban revolution is revolutionary in the sense that, for the first time in human history, the city becomes the driving force of society – its generative order. The chapter then elaborates on the notion of generative order, firstly, by comparing it to fractal development that leads to a scale-free distribution and to an “origami development” that leads to a scale-dependent development; and secondly, by exploring the ways human memory participates in these processes. In light of these theoretical constructs, the chapter examines the newly emerging urban society, with its new socio-economic-cultural groups – the creative class and the precariat.
