The first urban revolution
Juval Portugali
Chapter 1 in The Second Urban Revolution, 2025, pp 26-50 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The first part of this book focuses on the first urban revolution. Chapter 1 opens Part I by locating the first urban revolution within the broader context of the major revolutions in human history, such as the hominid and Neolithic revolutions. It continues by presenting classical theories of early transitions first to agriculture and then, as a consequence, to urbanism. The latter transition was coined by Childe as “the urban revolution”. While Childe's interpretation of the urban revolution was in line with Marxist approaches, subsequent interpretations, e.g. by Carneiro, interpreted it from the perspectives of Spencer's and Bosetup's population theory, Verhulst's logistic curve, and the notion of environmental carrying capacity.
