The business of trade lobbying

Chapter Chapter 5 in Pro Trade, Against Competition, 2025, pp 81-115 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 5 (‘The business of trade lobbying’) discusses the case selection criteria that have led to the selection of the following eight cases of U.S. firms: (1) producers of mushrooms, (2) producers of dairy products, (3) producers of paper and paperboard, (4) producers of solar cells and modules, (5) producers of woven sacks and plastic bags, (6) producers of tin plate, (7) producers of power transformers, and (8) producers of steel wheels. In addition, I present smaller case studies of lobbying activities in Canada and the EU to assess whether the findings can be generalized outside the U.S. context. Overall, the case studies demonstrate that the firms with multidimensional trade interests were generally in favor of selective trade measures, while firms with one-dimensional interests tended to call for increases (or reductions) in applied-to-all tariffs.
