The critical role of Romani feminism in decolonizing gender mainstreaming

Abstract: Linking decolonial feminist theory to Romani feminist thought, this spotlight shows how gender mainstreaming fails to account for the lived experiences of Romani women. It calls for “de-whitening” and “situating” Romani women's experiences and perspectives within non-Western and decolonial feminist theories as a critical part of a broader process of decolonizing gender mainstreaming. In so doing, it seeks to raise awareness of the persistent invisibility of Romani women – not only in society, but also in gender equality policies – and to foster dialogue and collaboration in feminist and policy-making spaces.
