Abstract: Authoritarianism is the world's dominant form of government. Research on autocracy has proliferated in recent decades, and classes on the subject, although offered less than their counterparts on democratic politics, have also become more common, especially but not exclusively in democracies. Despite these trends, there are few resources on how to teach about autocracy. This edited volume seeks to fill this gap by providing instructors with a useful resource when designing courses about authoritarian politics. It highlights important questions, both those that are commonly discussed as well as those that sometimes fall under the radar; it provides suggestions about what content instructors may wish to include; it considers the efficacy of various pedagogical techniques when teaching about autocracy; and it provides considerations to important ethical challenges specific to the subject. This introductory chapter sets out the need for the volume in greater detail and introduces the volume's content.
