Teaching autocracy in an autocratic context

Abstract: As authoritarian politics has become one of the most researched topics in political science, a practical issue arises: how can this subject matter be taught in universities located in autocracies? After all, openly discussing the inner workings of autocratic regimes in such countries is not risk-free. Drawing on my experience of teaching in two publicly funded universities in Hong Kong, a polity that has undergone a period of autocratization since at least a decade ago, I examine the likely challenges and opportunities confronting political scientists who teach about authoritarian politics during autocratization.
