Chapter 5 in Commodity Chains under Pressure, 2025, pp 99-118 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The COVID-19 outbreak significantly affected many areas and sectors of the global economy and changed consumer behaviour in terms of online purchases and delivery. As movements were restricted and social distancing was applied during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic activities in the area of food supply and delivery reinforced the use of various digital platforms. This chapter focuses on how COVID-19, as an external shock, drove and accelerated digitalisation in Botswana, particularly in the area of food supply and delivery. In particular, the chapter examines the digital depth of online food orders, supply, and delivery in the context of the external shock and the dynamics around this economic activity, by using the analytical concepts of digitalisation and digital transformation and data collected through observations and secondary sources during the recent COVID-19 crisis to understand the nature and dynamics of online food supply, order and delivery in Botswana.
