Technological innovation for ESG and sustainability

Jae-Yong Yang and Kwangtae Park

Chapter 5 in Elgar Companion to Technology Life Cycles, 2026, pp 98-116 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: We would like to examine the connection between technological innovation and ESG by maintaining the viewpoint that ESG risk management is one of the ‘socially responsible investments (SRI)’ in the type of investment that financial capital makes in companies. SRI refers to an investment method that considers not only financial information but also non-financial information of a company. Negative screening strategies, thematic sustainable investment, shareholder activism, ESG evaluation, and impact investment are included in socially responsible investment. If ESG investment, which focuses on environmental, social, and governance risk management, is called passive SRI, impact investment, which invests in businesses for solving environmental and social problems, can be called active SRI. In this chapter, we examine the theoretical approach and cases of major companies in relation to the problems that must be overcome for the sustainability of humanity and companies in terms of the environment and society. Through this, we aim to conceptualize an integrated model of technological innovation, ESG, and impact business and derive implications.
