A chapter in Climate, Hydrocarbons, Sanctions, 2026, pp 1-6 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Development of Russia's Arctic rim has focused on mega-projects in the energy sector combined with a revival of the Northern Sea Route, needed for transportation. At the same time, climate change is increasingly felt in this region and is expected to accelerate. The Russian economy is dependent on fossil fuel exports – where the Arctic is planned to play an increasing role – while the global trend is towards decarbonization. All the same, Russia presents itself as a supporter of the international climate regime. Russia's war in Ukraine has led to extensive sanctions from Western countries that have not radically undercut revenues, but nevertheless have impacted Russia's Arctic economy in both the short and longer term. Uncertainty prevails. This introduction presents the topics discussed in the book and its structure as well as a note on sources.
