Abstract:
Documented and expected mineral resource riches have given the Russian Arctic a position as a strategic resource base for Russia. Even if plans for the region included a balanced economic development, extraction industries – oil, natural gas, and coal – in reality have come to play an overriding role. One aspect of climate change – melting sea ice – has been seen to be helpful for these industries as it improves conditions for navigation and transportation on the Northern Sea Route.
