Multidimensional poverty: fighting poverty in all its dimensions

Narinder Kakar

Chapter 1 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 2-20 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The United Nations 2030 Agenda pledged to “Leave No One Behind”. While significant strides have been made in various areas, especially in terms of access to basic education, reduction of poverty and hunger, and multilateral cooperation, the progress has been uneven. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Southeast Asia and Europe made remarkable progress toward many goals of the 2030 Agenda. At the same time, sub-Saharan Africa exhibited alarming trends. One of the major concerns has been the world's progress toward elimination of poverty in all its forms. As poverty is multidimensional, this requires simultaneous and coordinated efforts to improve access to and quality of education, access to and quality of medical care, and creation of decent job opportunities. This chapter also explores this multidimensionality via the relationship between poverty and armed conflict, as well as poverty and climate change. It also offers specific recommendations, based on lessons from China, Cambodia, India, and Vietnam while aligning itself with the UN Pact for the Future.
