The role of education in peacebuilding

Francisco Rojas Aravena

Chapter 12 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 181-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Education is the essential instrument for confronting the great challenges and threats of the international system. Fulfilling the promise of the UN to eliminate wars for future generations will be possible if the culture of war is changed to the culture of peace. There are currently major setbacks in global stability and security in many regions around the world. These setbacks demand a multilateral dialogue, a recognition of the norms of international law, and an international humanitarian law. Tolerance and inclusion are critical, as well as transparency and fairness. Education in and for peace is an essential instrument for the prevention of all crises that are expressed in the global context. This chapter provides some suggestions on how to build peace capital.
