Multilateralism and international cooperation for sustainable development

Francisco Rojas Aravena and Emily Alfaro Rojas

Chapter 13 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 195-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Abstract: Geopolitical shifts, global terrorism, constant conflicts, and environmental issues threaten the international system and jeopardize multilateralism and international cooperation. Armed conflicts have escalated into hybrid wars that combine symmetrical and traditional wars. Traditional wars are prolonged, increasing human and material costs. Escalating conflicts and tensions in Europe, the Middle East, and Korea raise nuclear concerns. Transnational organized crime, the war on drugs, global terrorism, and the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbate crises and intensify difficulties at regional and global levels. Environmental crises, driven by increased fossil fuel use and lack of commitment, add to the challenges. This chapter argues that multilateralism and international dialogue are the only means of achieving sustainable development. Reviving multilateralism requires UN Security Council reform, strengthening the General Assembly, enhancing early warning systems, ensuring transparency, and regulating emerging technologies like AI. The chapter stresses the role of education and knowledge in rebuilding trust and reviving multilateralism as necessary conditions for attaining the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
