Chapter 15 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 225-240 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter considers the environmental dimensions of the Summit of the Future's outcome document, the Pact for the Future, including its annexes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. It contends that the environmental aspects of the Pact are critical to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda and to the environmental and existential health of our planet in the decades to come. It lays out the environmental content of the Pact and interrogates opportunities for leveraging momentum to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. It investigates the potential for change of these recommendations in the context of the advancement in language on fossil fuels and decarbonization across the major intergovernmental forums; the uniqueness of the 2030 Agenda as it relates to environmental issues; and the mutual reinforcement of environmental goals and the 2030 Agenda more broadly. Accordingly, the article will analyze the roadblocks stymying the holistic implementation of the Pact's environmental goals and the 2030 Agenda, probing the formidable challenges and ample opportunities for building a better tomorrow. The chapter maintains that the success of the Pact's environmental recommendations and ambitions will depend on the international community joining hands to work together, with the support of the multilateral system led by the UN.
