Beyond the human right to a healthful environment: One Health for the biosphere

Chapter 4 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 55-73 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
To be effective, the One Health approach that encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration for addressing emerging infectious diseases should be developed into a holistic framework that integrates all sectors with mandates to attain and sustain a healthful environment. This requires acknowledging synergistic relationships centered on the health of the biosphere, wherein all life is found. Indicators that governments and civil society are moving toward such a convergence of efforts is evident in recognizing the human right to the environment, in the explicit application of international law to prevent harm to the biosphere. As human health erodes across all regions of the biosphere, it is likely that the judiciary will begin to enforce these duties, state by state, in a pattern of bottom-up lateral stewardship, rather than by top-down governance through multilateral environmental treaties.
