The role of civil society in fostering sustainable development

Olufunke M. Baruwa

Chapter 5 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 74-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Civil society holds a critical position in sustainable development and has significant opportunities to enhance its impact on the global development agenda, particularly in the Pact for the Future. However, given the myriad of challenges that the sector has to navigate, including limited resources and a restrictive policy and regulatory environment as well as closed civic space, the sector must find innovative ways to collaborate for greater impact and influence. The rise of digital technology offers new tools for advocacy, data collection, and community engagement. Global partnerships and collaborations also provide platforms for civil society organizations (CSOs) to collaborate to influence international policies, share successful strategies, and avoid duplication of their efforts and ensure optimum utilization of limited resources. CSOs can thus create networks and coalitions that bring together various stakeholders to work towards common sustainability goals. These networks enhance collaboration, resource sharing, and collective action. They work to strengthen the civil society sector overall, building its capacity to contribute effectively to sustainable development.
