Environmental displacement and human migration in the most vulnerable nations
Tessel van der Putte
Chapter 6 in Pathways To Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 88-103 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores how environmental degradation and climate change are impacting migration and displacement in vulnerable countries and the communities that live in them. It uses case studies of Mexico City, Bangladesh, and the Pacific Islands, with a particular focus on people's relationship with water. Inspired by systems thinking and using a human rights-based lens, this chapter emphasizes the importance of an intersectional and especially gender-sensitive perspective in environmental migration and climate-induced displacement, as well as the distinctive reality of Indigenous communities. The chapter offers recommendations for action in alignment with the recently adopted UN Pact for the Future. This groundbreaking document calls for a reframing of migration not as a threat but as an adaptive strategy and shared global responsibility, which is currently disproportionately borne by nations and communities that traditionally have had few or no seats at the table.
