Strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in dairy farming

Hassan Qudrat-Ullah () and Mohammad Shamsuddoha ()

Chapter 5 in System Dynamics for Sustainable Agriculture and Resilient Supply Chains, 2025, pp 93-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Since dairy production increases carbon dioxide and methane, greenhouse gas emission reduction techniques are crucial. Farmers require significant knowledge and expertise to apply sustainable methods, which cost money. This study uses case studies and system dynamics to understand livestock ecosystems and minimize dairy GHG emissions. Dairy production generates substantial greenhouse gases, so innovative techniques are needed to reduce its environmental effects. This study replicates feedback loops and temporal changes in complex systems using system dynamics to investigate alternatives to intervention alternatives in dairy farming. It integrates reliable case study data to assess the benefits of emission reduction techniques such as feed management, manure handling, and energy efficiency. System dynamics models determine carbon emission for a farm and find out by estimating the long-term impacts. Consequently, the study suggests possible strategies for reducing emissions for livestock profitability and environmental restoration. The recommendations will assist dairy farmers, feed producers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers in embracing sustainable livestock management to lower GHG emissions. This paper examines two cases from the perspective of developing countries and limits its study to a particular region of Bangladesh. Future studies may broaden the scope and capacity of incorporating technologies by the farm to examine the difference in results.
