System dynamics modeling for sustainable tilapia fish production: enhancing quality meat production

Hassan Qudrat-Ullah () and Mohammad Shamsuddoha ()

Chapter 7 in System Dynamics for Sustainable Agriculture and Resilient Supply Chains, 2025, pp 134-160 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Balancing environmental sustainability with economic viability is challenging due to the growing global demand for food. Tilapia farming supports commercial aquaculture by providing affordable fish meat, especially in countries like Bangladesh, but faces criticism over unhygienic production processes. Key issues such as market price fluctuations, disease outbreaks, and feed and water quality impact productivity and sustainability. This study employs system dynamics (SD) and simulation modeling to analyze and improve tilapia farming processes. By examining variables like market demand, water quality, disease outbreaks, and feed quality, the model identifies strategies to enhance productivity and profitability while aligning with sustainability goals. Results highlight the benefits of efficient disease control, resource optimization, and market forecasting. The study provides actionable insights for farmers, policymakers, and business owners to adopt innovative, sustainable practices and suggests future research on aquaculture operations across species and regions.
