Evaluation on the procedural level: alternative approaches
Jonas G. Lipski ()
Chapter 3 in Evaluating Competing Explanatory Games in Economics, 2025, pp 71-108 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
I analyze the historically most influential approaches towards evaluating science on the level of procedural rules, specifically those by Kuhn, Feyerabend, Lakatos, Laudan, and Kitcher. I demonstrate that these theories mainly rest upon mistaken assumptions on the descriptive level, which also lead to mistaken approaches on the normative level. Laudan's reticulated model does showcase some advantages over Mantzavinos's normative approach. I modify Mantzavinos's approach accordingly.
